AI solutions for pharmacies: the guide
An AI solution for pharmacies is software that takes over, using the pharmacy’s real data, service tasks the team used to do by hand: answering the phone, informing a patient, reading a prescription, monitoring stock. This page surveys the category as it exists in France in 2026: the uses that hold up, what a complete ecosystem covers for a pharmacy, solution by solution, what helps it improve, what artificial intelligence does not do in a pharmacy, the framework to respect, the criteria for choosing and what it costs.
1. What is meant by an AI solution for pharmacies
The term covers two families that are best kept apart. The first is general-purpose assistants that anyone can open in a browser: useful for drafting a letter or summarising a text, but they know neither the stock, nor the opening hours, nor the pharmacy’s patients, and nothing in them is designed for health data. The second is solutions designed for pharmacies: an AI agent connected to the pharmacy management software, hosted for health data, acting within a defined scope and passing to the pharmacist whatever requires a pharmacist.
This page is about the second family. An AI solution for pharmacies is recognised by three things: it reads the pharmacy’s real data (stock, orders, submitted prescriptions), it provides a service to the patient or the team without ever making the decision to dispense, and it leaves a trace the pharmacy owner can review. At Nexum, this AI layer is called Nexum Health AI: the same agents on the phone, on WhatsApp, in the app and in the Nexum Pro cockpit.
2. Uses of AI in the pharmacy in 2026
The uses that hold up in a town-centre pharmacy are those where the request is repetitive, the answer can be checked against the data, and the handover to a human is built in. In practice:
- The AI phone system, or voice agent: it picks up on the first ring, 24/7, understands the patient speaking normally, answers on opening hours and on product availability read from the stock, takes reservations, and transfers to the pharmacist when needed. It is the most mature use and the most measurable: the Nexum voice assistant took 233,484 calls between 5 October 2025 and 17 September 2026 (Nexum figure).
- The patient assistant, or chatbot: the same agent in writing, on the pharmacy’s website, in the app and on WhatsApp. It finds the pharmacy, shows the catalogue with real stock, takes reservations, books appointments, and passes any health question to the team.
- Prescription reading: a prescription submitted as a photo or PDF is read line by line and prepared for the pharmacist, who checks and dispenses. The AI prepares; it does not validate.
- Stock and sales analysis: stock anomalies, products missing from the software, products to promote, based on the pharmacy management software’s data. At Nexum, this analysis agent is coming (◐).
- The back office: letters, reports, replies to reviews, third-party payment rejections. These are assisted office-work uses, useful, but they do not touch the relationship with the patient.
A single agent can cover several of these uses; what matters is that it is connected to the pharmacy’s data and not to general answers. An assistant that invents availability loses a patient; an assistant that reads it from the stock brings them in.
3. A complete ecosystem for the pharmacy, solution by solution
A stand-alone AI solution fixes one task. What a pharmacy needs is for the phone, the website, the app, messaging, delivery and stock to work from the same catalogue and report into the same tool. That is what Nexum builds: an ecosystem that equips the whole pharmacy, with an honest status for each component.
- AI voice assistant ● Available
The pharmacy’s AI phone system: it answers on the first ring, reads the stock, makes reservations, takes a transcribed message and transfers to the pharmacist. On-call duty, nights and Sundays included. - Nexum Health AI ● Available
The AI layer of the whole ecosystem: the same agents on the phone, on WhatsApp, in the app and in Nexum Pro. No medical advice; any health question is passed to the team. - Patient assistant (chatbot) ● Available
The pharmacy’s chatbot, on its website and app: opening hours, availability against real stock, reservations, order tracking, appointments, uploaded prescriptions. - WhatsApp AI ● Available
The pharmacy’s WhatsApp, with the same assistant; the team picks up the conversation in Nexum Pro. WhatsApp Flows (reservations, appointments) are live. - Nexum Pharma: the pharmacy’s website and app ● Available
Each pharmacy has its own website and app in its name: catalogue based on real stock, reservations, click and collect, appointments, chat, prescription upload as a photo or PDF, delivery on the chosen date. - Delivery ● Available
From Nexum Pro, the pharmacist orders a courier for a customer or a fellow pharmacist, paid by the pharmacy or by the customer, tracked live and handed over against a signature. - Connected catalogue (pharmacy management software) ● Available, real time depends on the software
A connector to the pharmacy management software (LGPI, Winpharma, Pharmaland, SmartRx, Cristal, LEO…): a single stock for the phone, the website, the app and messaging, without changing software. - Nexum Pro, the cockpit ● Available
A single cockpit for all of Nexum: calls, orders, deliveries, messages, opening hours, team, statistics. Web and mobile. - Prescription reading ◔ Rolling out
The uploaded prescription is read line by line and prepared for the pharmacist, who checks and dispenses. - Stock and sales analysis agent ◐ Coming soon
Stock anomalies, products missing from the software, products to promote: improvements suggested from the pharmacy management software’s data. - Campaigns and automated tasks ◐ Coming soon
Email, SMS and WhatsApp campaigns from Nexum Pro, and recurring tasks handed to the AI. - Security and HDS hosting ● Available
Health data hosted in France on HDS servers, encrypted at rest; no health document passes through a third-party service; sub-processors published.
Three plans per pharmacy (Essentiel, Premium, Intégrale), no commitment, and a Group plan on quote: the details are on the pricing page. The “Independent pharmacy”, “Pharmacy group” and “On-call pharmacy” pages describe the same suite according to the pharmacy’s situation.
4. What helps the pharmacy improve
Equipping a pharmacy is pointless if it cannot see what changes. The second function of a complete ecosystem, after the service, is measurement: knowing what the phone used to take at the counter, what the AI has handled, what was sold thanks to a reservation or a delivery, and what is still to be corrected in the stock.
- The Nexum Pro dashboard: calls handled and transferred, reasons, peak hours, reservations, orders, deliveries, messages. The pharmacy reads what the AI did, call by call.
- The missed-call calculator: using the pharmacy’s own figures (calls per day, share missed, basket, time on the phone), a dated estimate of what the phone costs and of what a solution brings in.
- The market comparison: the public prices of 22 players in the pharmacy market (voice agents, appointment systems, online shops, delivery), with dated sources, set against the Nexum offer.
- The Observatory: readings from the Nexum network (calls, deliveries, baskets) published with their period and scope.
- The analysis agent (◐ coming soon): stock and product anomalies, data missing from the software, products to promote, suggested to the pharmacy owner, who decides.
- For a group: consolidated oversight of all its pharmacies, described on the Group page.
In every case, the AI suggests and measures; it is the pharmacy owner who decides, and they find every decision in their tool.
5. Generic assistant or solution connected to the pharmacy: the difference
The question to put to any “AI for pharmacists” is simple: where do its answers come from? A generic assistant answers with what it knows about the world in general. An AI solution for pharmacies answers with what the pharmacy knows about itself.
| What the pharmacy experiences | Generic assistant | AI solution for pharmacies |
|---|---|---|
| Answer on real stock | — | Read from the pharmacy management software |
| Answers the patient on the phone, 24/7 | — | |
| Health data hosted to HDS standard, in France | — | |
| Handover to the pharmacist when justified | — | |
| Draft a letter or a summary | Yes | Yes, in the back office |
6. How an AI solution is set up in a pharmacy
- 1.The pharmacy defines the needWhich calls, which requests, which tasks come back every day without requiring a pharmacist? One week of records is enough: call reasons, peak hours, submitted prescriptions.
- 2.It checks the connection to the management softwareThe solution must read the stock in the software the pharmacy already uses, without migration. Real-time reading depends on the installed software; it is the first question to put to the vendor.
- 3.It sets the scope and the scenariosWhat the agent answers on its own, what it reserves, what it transfers, the welcome message, on-call hours. The pharmacy owner must be able to change these settings without raising a ticket.
- 4.Go-liveFor the phone, the pharmacy forwards its line to the assigned number and keeps its operator; no technician on site. At Nexum, go-live of the voice assistant takes 48 hours, remotely.
- 5.It measures, then expandsCalls handled, reasons, reservations, transfers: the dashboard shows what the AI took on and what was passed to the team. The scope is widened on the basis of these figures, not before.
7. What AI does in the pharmacy, what it does not do
It does: pick up, inform, reserve, take a deposit, transcribe a message, call back, read a prescription to prepare it, direct to delivery or collection, flag a stock anomaly. What is automated is data entry and service.
It does not: dispense, advise on a treatment, settle a health question, replace the team. No serious AI solution gives medical advice: any health question is passed on to the pharmacy. The decision remains the pharmacist’s, and responsibility does not shift. This is also the position of the French Order of Pharmacists in its thematic booklet on AI in healthcare: an aid, never an autonomous system.
8. Six criteria for choosing an AI solution for your pharmacy
- Where do the answers come from: the pharmacy’s stock and data, or general knowledge?
- Does the connection to the pharmacy management software exist for the installed software, and in real time?
- What happens to what the AI cannot handle: handover to the team, transcribed message, or a lost request?
- Where is the data hosted, by whom, and is the hosting HDS-certified?
- What does the offer actually cover today, and what is announced for later? An honest vendor writes it down.
- Is the price dated and commitment-free, and what does it include: phone line, device, channels, options?
9. The framework: health data, the Order, the European regulation
Three texts frame an AI solution in a pharmacy. Hosting of health data must be HDS-certified (French Public Health Code, article L.1111-8): prescription or call data cannot pass through a service that is not. The French Order of Pharmacists reminds that AI is a decision aid and that the pharmaceutical decision remains the pharmacist’s. The European regulation on artificial intelligence (AI Act, in force since 1 August 2024, with obligations phased in until 2027) requires in particular that the caller knows they are speaking to a machine: a voice assistant introduces itself as such at the start of the call. GDPR also applies to any personal data. At Nexum, health data is hosted in France on HDS servers, encrypted at rest; call recording is an option the pharmacy turns on or off, with a prior message to the caller.
10. How much an AI solution for a pharmacy costs
Solutions designed for pharmacies are sold as a monthly subscription, per pharmacy, most often with no commitment; custom development is priced separately and costs far more. At Nexum, the voice assistant runs from €180 to €349 excl. VAT per month depending on the plan (rates as of 1 July 2026), and the full ecosystem (voice assistant, Nexum Health AI, reservation website and app, Nexum Pro cockpit) is detailed on the pricing page. Before comparing prices, it is worth measuring what the pharmacy loses today: the voice assistant calculator estimates the cost of missed calls and of time spent on the phone using the pharmacy’s own figures.
11. Frequently asked questions
Will AI replace the pharmacist?
No. An AI solution for pharmacies takes repetitive requests that do not require a pharmacist off the team (availability, opening hours, order status, reservation) and passes the rest on to it. Dispensing, advice and any health question remain human acts.
Can an AI solution give a patient medical advice?
It should not. A serious solution provides a service (finding the pharmacy, reading the stock, reserving, booking an appointment) and passes any health question to the pharmacy team. At Nexum, this is a design rule: no medical advice, anywhere.
Does a pharmacy need to change its management software to install an AI solution?
No. A solution designed for pharmacies connects to the pharmacy management software already in place through a connector; real-time stock reading depends on the installed software. If a vendor requires a migration, that is a signal to take into account.
Where is patient data hosted?
Health data must be hosted with an HDS-certified host. At Nexum, it is hosted in France, encrypted at rest, and no health document passes through a third-party service. The question should be put to every vendor, along with a request for the list of subcontractors.
Where to start?
With the phone, for most pharmacies: it is the heaviest workload, the most measurable, and the easiest to equip (line forwarding, remote go-live). The other uses (patient assistant, prescription, stock analysis) are then added on the same connection to the management software.
