What is an AI agent in a pharmacy?
An AI agent in a pharmacy is an artificial intelligence program that carries out a service task for the pharmacy, using its real data: checking availability, reserving a product, reading a prescription to prepare the order, answering a message. It acts, but it does not decide in the pharmacist's place, and it gives no medical advice. This page defines the AI agent, tells it apart from a simple chatbot and sets out its limits.
1. Definition
An AI agent (also called an "artificial intelligence agent") receives a request, understands what it requires and looks for the answer in the pharmacy's tools: the management software's stock, opening hours, the order queue. Then it acts: it reserves, it prepares, it passes on.
In a pharmacy, its role is bounded. It takes on what is repetitive and verifiable, so the team keeps its time for the counter. Artificial intelligence in a pharmacy replaces neither the pharmacist nor the relationship with the patient.
2. AI agent or simple chatbot: the difference
A simple chatbot follows a script: it recognises keywords and returns answers written in advance. It knows nothing about today's stock, and it stops where the script stops.
An AI agent understands a sentence written or spoken normally, consults the real data and carries out the requested action. The answer "yes, the product is on the shelf" comes from the management software; the reservation goes into the team's queue.
3. What an AI agent does in a pharmacy
Its tasks are service tasks, the ones that come back all day on the phone, in the chat and on WhatsApp:
- Say whether a product is available, from the real stock, and offer an equivalent in case of a stockout.
- Reserve a product, which the patient then collects at the pharmacy.
- Offer an appointment slot at the pharmacy (◔ Rolling out at Nexum).
- Read a prescription uploaded as a photo or a PDF, line by line, to prepare the order before the patient comes in.
- Answer routine messages (opening hours, on-call rota, order tracking) and pass the rest on to the team.
- On the team side: find an order, prepare a restock, flag a dormant product or a missing margin, for approval.
Every action is visible to the team in its tool. Nothing is done behind its back.
4. Its limits: no medical advice, the pharmacist decides
An AI agent in a pharmacy gives no medical advice: no dosage, no opinion on a treatment, no guidance on a symptom. Any health question is passed on to the pharmacy team.
Reading a prescription prepares, it does not dispense: nothing goes out without the pharmacist's validation, who alone remains in charge of dispensing. The suggestions made to the team (restocking, promotion, adjustment) are suggestions, approved or set aside by the team.
5. Health data and hosting
An AI agent handles health data as soon as it reads a prescription. Before equipping a pharmacy, you need to know where that data is hosted and who has access to it.
At Nexum, health data is hosted in France on HDS servers, encrypted at rest, in compliance with GDPR. Each building block is written by the Nexum team, and no health document passes through a third-party service.
6. The Nexum Health AI agents
Nexum Health AI is the artificial intelligence of the Nexum ecosystem. Its agents share the same foundation and the same data. Statuses as of 17 September 2026:
- The Patient assistant · ● Available: it finds the pharmacy and the product, and reserves, on the voice assistant, the website, the app and WhatsApp.
- The reading agent · ● Available for the prescription; reading the documents in the customer file is ◐ Coming.
- The WhatsApp agent · ● Available, on the pharmacy's number; the team taking over the conversation is ◔ Rolling out.
- The Pharmacy assistant, for the team in Nexum Pro · ● Available.
- The Pharmacy agent, which analyses prices, stock and margins · ● Available.

7. Frequently asked questions
Can an AI agent replace the pharmacist?
No. The AI agent takes on service tasks: availability, reservation, prescription reading to prepare, routine messages. Dispensing, advice and every decision remain those of the pharmacist and the team.
Does an AI agent give health advice?
No. No medical advice: no dosage, no opinion on a treatment, no guidance on a symptom. Any health question is passed on to the pharmacy team, by a call transfer, in the conversation thread or through a callback.
What is the difference between an AI agent and a chatbot?
A simple chatbot follows a script of answers written in advance. An AI agent understands the request, consults the pharmacy's real data, such as the management software's stock, and carries out the action: reserve, prepare, pass on.
How does the AI agent read a prescription?
The patient uploads the prescription as a photo or a PDF. The reading agent reads each line, matches it with the pharmacy's catalogue and flags what is on the shelf. The order is thus prepared, but nothing goes out without the pharmacist's validation.
Do you have to change management software?
No. The Nexum Health AI agents read the stock of the management software the pharmacy already uses, alongside it. Reservations and messages arrive in Nexum Pro.
Where is the data processed by the agent hosted?
In France, on HDS servers, encrypted at rest and in compliance with GDPR. No health document passes through a third-party service.
